| More Information on Metal Halide HID Light Bulbs: |
|
Metal halide light bulbs have become the chosen method of most outdoor and industrial lighting applications. While they are available (and useful) in small sizes, the ones used the most are 175 watt or higher. First of all, metal halide bulbs cannot be used in just any fixture or socket. They require a ballast to operate at all, which means a special metal halide light fixture is not an option, it's a requirement. Basic models also need to be used in enclosed fixtures, though the Sylvania Pro-Tech line, for instance, can be used in open fixtures.
Within this category, there are a few different styles. The most popular is known as the BT28 or BT37 shape. The distinct shape makes it easy to tell the difference from standard light bulbs or the generally oval shaped mercury vapor bulbs. The single ended tube shaped metal halide bulbs are used in highly specialized equipment, where control of the beam spread is required or where space is tight.
Editor's note: If the descripion on your bulb begins with M or MH, such as M400 or MH1000, you have a metal halide bulb. Another way to know is to look at the brand name. Sylvania Metalarc and GE Multi Vapor are brand names for bulbs that are metal halides.
