For many years, people have been trying to replace typical 75 watt R40 floodlights that they've been using in recessed or track lighting.  Many times people don't think about the various options there are to replace a it with a halogen bulb.  People often think they need to go to a smaller size bulb or to something like a energy saving version of the same light, which usually means a sacrifice in light output.  Although they've been out for quite some time, 45PAR38 lamps are the natural replacement choice in a halogen. PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector and this one is just shy of 5 inches in diameter. These types of bulbs will provide you with a high light output, a more white-colored light (a higher color temperature - approximately 3000K), and longer life than normal R or BR reflectors. That is why the halogen are many times used in energy saving lighting situations because they are more efficient in their light production.
