Many people think that these small halogen bulbs are strictly a low voltage lamp, but nothing could be further from the truth.  All kinds of capsule bulbs have a 120 volt or line voltage rating.  They're used in all different kinds of halogen products such as bulbs, flood lights and much more.  The reason they're chosen is that they don't require a transformer to change from one voltage to another.  It makes fixtures and replacement maintenance costs less over the long term. There's probably never been a lamp which has found more uses in such a short period of time, because it's one of the most flexible for many uses, and the trend is continuing.  Many fixture manufacturers see the small size and filament structure in a lamp that has the potential for a great amount of control.  Bipin 120 volt halogen light bulbs are really nothing more than the original halogen capsule developed by Sylvania many years ago.  Many people will use these in task lights, or under cabinet lighting and different types of display.  The bipin lamps are generally identified by their wattage, bulb size and the pin spacing in millimeters.  The pin spacing can be as little as 6.35mm and as high as 9mm in these 120 volt versions. 

All halogen bulbs are filled with a special gas that actually rebuilds the filament and provides longer average life than old style incandescent bulbs. They come in different shapes and sizes for various different uses. The Sylvania or Westinghouse bipin 120 volt halogen light bulbs will provide you with a high light output, a more white-colored light (a higher color temperature - approximately 3000K), and longer life than normal miniature lamps. That is why the halogen are many times used in energy saving lighting situations because they are more efficient in their light production. Sylvania generally calls their halogen line Capsylite and within that category are many different configurations of light bulbs.  One of the things to watch out for is the voltage, as many times people do not identify that correctly.  If it's not right, you might get a very early failure. Like all halogen bulbs, these should not be touched with your skin in any way and sometimes the packaging comes with a foam or paper wrapper to prevent this. If they are touched, the life span of the bulb will be greatly reduced. In case you ever do touch a bulb, wipe it thoroughly with a soft cloth. Bulbs that are covered, like the PAR and some of the MR halogen bulbs, are okay to touch, since you are not touching the actual bulb but a heavy, thick glass that covers the light bulb.  Most commonly, they are put into an enclosure but be aware of touching a halogen capsule itself directly, is not a good idea as it will shorten lamp life..

The standard 120 volt version of bipin halogen described here are often used in task lighting or under cabinet lights with a round surface mounted shape.  Of course, they are put into other enclosures by manufacturers to give beam control in the case of a flood light or in a sealed bulb for extra protection.  In any case, the effect is a high light output in a very small space.  This makes the fixtures less noticeable or more diminutive.  This is what a lot of designers like, a light that literally disappears into the surroundings leaving the illumination effect.  That's what these lamps do for people, giving them ample light while not getting in the way of other design elements in the room.

From flood lighting, task lighting or in a large commercial space, you will most likely find bipin 120 volt halogen bulbs used in many kinds of lighting applications.
