It's becoming more common today to find bulbs that have a lower voltage than standard 120 volt.  The reason for that is the technology to operate low voltage light bulbs properly has improved, better control with better transformers make these lamps a reality for everyday use.  There are many different voltages they could be classified this way such as 6 volt, 12 volt or 24 volt, but the most common of these are the 12 volt bulbs. Some come in MR16 shape, MR11 or even the common household light bulb.  These are the standard size bulbs which you might be familiar with, the ones you've probably bought for years in hardware stores.  You might also know them as A19 bulbs.  The "A" shape was one of the first designs and continues to still be the one most people use.  They fit in almost any light fixture, but one of the most common places that it's used are in landscape and outdoor lighting.  It has a standard medium base and screws into sockets that are made for all kinds of lighting.  The reason they have an outdoor application is that many light systems for landscape light fixtures utilize low voltage light bulbs.  Of course, there are the 12 volt halogen lamps of the bipin variety which fit in these fixtures as well.  They are very small, so it makes an ideal solution for small fixtures requiring high amounts of illumination.

Incandescent lamps are the type that were developed earliest of any of the other kinds and these developed into what we know as the low voltage light bulbs.  As far as the household bulbs go, there are several wattages of these that are available right now which would be the 25, 50, 75 or 100 watt versions.  They have a frosted finish and are the same size as regular bulbs.  There are also a great number of MR16 lamps which are the 12 or 24 volt specification in many wattages and a variety of beam spreads.  The MR16 is commonly used in track lighting in retail stores and the 12 volt system is the one of choice for most engineers.  If you don't know whether you have a low or high voltage system inside or outside, then you need to have an electrician check it out for you or check the previous bulb you used and look for a lower volt rating than 120 volt anywhere on the bulb itself.  Although this voltage isn't a common use of an A shape light bulb, they do pop up once in a while for certain kinds of 12 volt lighting situations.  We always keep these in stock and we sell them at a very reasonable price.
