Lighting Library : Other Halogen : MR20 GU10 Halogen Light Bulbs

It's really new and one of the more unusual halogen MR products that you will find.  It's larger in diameter than an MR16 lamp and has a GU base.  Most people that have this lamp now are really having a hard time finding it, but we have them for you.  Sometimes people say all these lamps look like little satellite dishes and there are some similarities to that shape.  The MR20 was developed as a 120 volt for use in track lighting systems.  Like all halogen capsule bulbs, they are filled with a special gas that actually rebuilds the filament and provides longer average lifespan than normal incandescent bulbs.  The MR20 GU10 is the one that has a 2.5 inch reflector with a silvered (dichroic) coated which is usually faceted when it's a flood light, non-faceted when it's a spot.  Halogen bulbs burn about 10 percent brighter and hotter than normal incandescent bulbs.  Because of their relatively smaller size, these have been specified in systems where people want a 120 volt line instead of low voltage.  It gives you the opportunity to have MR20 lamps without using a transformer.  The base has a sturdy two prong base with the ability to twist and lock for a secure seating.  This MR20 GU10 halogen always has a cover over the lamp, this is to protect from breakage in power surges or violent failure.  They have a bipin or GU10 base which pushes into the socket and then there is usually a holder in the fixture or sometimes they are out in the open.

Here are some precautions for handling these lamps and for halogen lamps in general.  Halogen bulbs should not be touched with your skin in any way. If they are touched, their is a good chance there will be premature failure over time.  You usually won't get an instant failure, so it's good to make sure that you handle it right for longevity sake.  In case you ever do touch a halogen light bulb, wipe it thoroughly with a soft cloth. Bulbs that are covered, like the PAR and the MR20 GU10 halogen light bulbs, are okay to touch, since you are not touching the actual bulb but a heavy, thick glass that covers the light bulb.

If you have MR20 halogen light bulbs in your home or business, then you want to make sure of several characteristics when replacing them.  You need to make sure that the reflector opening is 2.5 inch, verify the operating voltage of the lamp and the pin spacing of the bulbs themselves.  A typical MR20 has a pin spacing at 10 millimeters and what is called a GU10 twist lock base.  It's important to also get the wattage of the lamp which is clearly marked in most cases.  In the case of the MR20, it's usually a 75 watt right now.  Whatever type of halogen you have, we have the right sizes and wattages for your lighting application and the knowledge to help you make a good lighting decision.  Our large inventory of halogen bulbs insures that we will be able to ship to you immediately including these special lamps.  If you need help identifying MR20 light bulbs of any kind or brand, our customer service representatives can help you determine what you have.
