While they're not unusual from the standpoint of what they look like, it's just that the size is special.  These flood lights are small enough to use in almost any recessed or track lighting fixture and are slightly smaller across the face than the R30 reflector flood.  The most common wattage is the 50 or 75 watt R25 sometimes also called the 50R25 or 75R25 flood light.  They fit almost anywhere, including the eyeball fixtures which can turn in almost any direction.  You'll sometimes find those kind of fixtures when it's close to a wall to highlight a picture, announcement or product as in the case of a retail store.  Sometimes these incandescent bulbs have a special size which only can be used in certain brands of track lighting.  That's right some manufacturers have made some track that will work with this bulb only.  When compared to regular incandescent lighting, ours are longer lasting than the store bought kind because they are 130 volt if you choose them from our store that way.  The higher rating protects the lamp from power surges and electrical spikes which can sometimes blow out the bulb.

For most installations, they are used in recessed lighting with a 4 inch or 3 1/2 opening and can be dimmed with a standard incandescent dimmer.  In many types of lighting applications, the dimming capability is what makes it a wonderful choice for dining rooms, kitchens or high ceiling lighting for large rooms.  The places where the R25 flood light can be used are endless and have probably been used in ways it was never intended.  If you have track lighting, then it probably makes sense to upgrade to a halogen PAR20 which will give you more light with a greater variety of beam patterns.  The R25 is 3.1 inches across the face if you're measuring it for identification purposes.  That's slightly smaller than the more common BR30 or R30 lamp that's been used for a long time.  Wherever you use an R30 and you need a little more space, the R25 would be an excellent replacement giving the same illumination.

With the advent of higher electrical costs, many businesses are looking for ways to save energy with lighting.  Obviously, compact fluorescent flood lights are the perfect choice to replace higher wattage incandescent R25 flood light bulbs and save energy.  Just look for areas where you might use R25 incandescent light bulbs and find the right replacement on our web site.  You might need to choose a PAR20 halogen or an R20 compact fluorescent.  This is more true in commercial lighting than it is for residential as they are a larger user of electricity during the day or high demand times. Please note that your energy savings can be very significant when changing from incandescent flood lights to fluorescent flood lights over almost any other kind of retrofit.
