Lighting Library : Halogen Par : Sylvania PAR38 Capsylite IR Halogen Light Bulbs

In the history of halogen lighting, there has never been a breakthrough like the infrared technology from Sylvania.  You can now save energy over standard PAR38 lamps while still getting the same amount of light output that you had before.  We now have the PAR38 lamps available that have a specially designed halogen capsule featuring a multi-layered thin film coating that allows visible light to pass through while reflecting infrared energy back to the filament.  It makes the bulb much more energy efficient, and in the case of the PAR38, it allows the wattage to be reduced to 60, 80 or 100 watts from the standard wattage lamps.  There will typically be a 30% energy savings over the old standard halogens.  Although there are other manufacturers of halogen, no one has anything as efficient or that performs as well as the Sylvania brand.

Like any other halogens, this bulb is an incandescent bulb, just like the typical BR40 or R40 incandescent flood bulbs that have been in use for decades. These halogen bulbs, however, are filled with a special gas that actually rebuilds the filament and provides longer average life than normal incandescent bulbs. The Sylvania PAR38 Capsylite IR halogen light bulbs are flood shaped with the heavy, thick glass that is common to many large sized halogen bulbs. PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector. These types of bulbs will provide you with a high light output, a more white-colored light (a higher color temperature - approximately 3000K), and longer life than normal R or BR reflectors. That is why the halogen are many times used in energy saving lighting situations because they are more efficient in their light production. The PAR38 is a good direct replacement for the incandescent R40 or standard PAR38 halogens that have been used in track lighting or outdoor lighting applications.

The Sylvania PAR38 Capsylite IR halogen is a large flood bulb, like the ones most people use for a backyard security light.  In order to determine what kind of PAR lamp you have by measuring the distance across the widest point of the bulb. The number after 'PAR' represents the number of eighths of an inch the bulb diameter is. Therefore, PAR38 lamps are 4 3/4 inches across. They have standard bases and are able to be used indoors or outdoors. This means they can be directly exposed to rain or snow and still function normally and they do not need to be covered by a light fixture.  This new lamp is typically 60, 80 or 100 watts replacing the older 150, 100 or 90 watt versions while delivering the same amount of light.  The code for this lamp is usually something like 60PAR38/CAP/IR,  80PAR38/CAP/IR or  1000PAR38/CAP/IR plus the associated beam spread that you would find whether it be wide flood, narrow flood or spot. Sylvania also uses SPL optics which give an even, full beam pattern, no dark shadows here.

Many people also use these PAR38 bulbs for restaurants, clothing stores, jewelry, art work, sculptures, etc.  In the case of retail lighting, the way you light something can make the difference in selling something or not.  Whatever type of lighting need you have, you will be saving energy while getting the most light you can for your money.  We have a large inventory of IR halogen bulbs for nearly every type of light fixture in the field.  If you need help identifying the bulb need, our customer service representatives can help you determine what you have.
