Lighting Library : Other Halogen : Sylvania Tru-Aim MR16 Halogen Light Bulbs

One of the most recent innovations in halogen lighting technology is the infrared or IR technology.  With it's infrared-reflecting coating on the halogen capsule, these lamps use significantly less energy to produce their high light output. So in the field, you can replace 50 watt MR16 lamps with these 37 watt IR lamps and get the same amount of light output, saving energy and money.  Sylvania Tru-Aim IR lamps also feature a hardened dichroic reflector, so there is no shift in color over the lampメs 4000-hour life. A special UV-control capsule effectively eliminates all UV-B and UV-C radiation, greatly reducing any potential for fading of merchandise or decor. Finally, a precisely aligned axial filament results in an exceptionally smooth beam pattern.  This lamp is truly the ultimate in MR16 lighting technology as it solves several problems at once.  If you're a retail merchandiser, then these lamps will save you lots of energy and will also portray you product in the best possible light.  Originally, the MR16 was developed as a 12 volt lamp for use in low voltage lighting systems.  It's almost impossible to get the same quality of halogen light effect from any other kind of lamp.  It has a unique illumination effect and the light control is great.  Like all halogen capsule bulbs, they are filled with a special gas that actually rebuilds the filament and provides longer average lifespan than normal incandescent bulbs.

With energy savings such an important aspect of using these lamps, how much can a person save by switching to these lamps? Generally, for every standard 50W MR16 lamp you replace with a 37W TRU-AIM IR lamp, you can save more than $5.00 in energy costs with no reduction in light output (based on a utility rate of $0.10 per kWh over the TRU-AIM IR service life of 4000 hours).  That's a significant savings while getting the other benefits of longer life, no color shift and a superior beam pattern.

Sylvania Tru-Aim MR16 or any halogen light bulb should not come into contact with your skin. If they are touched, the life span of the bulb will be greatly reduced. In case you ever do touch a halogen light bulb, wipe it thoroughly with a soft cloth. Bulbs that are covered, like the PAR and some of the MR16 halogen light bulbs, are okay to touch, since you are not touching the actual bulb but a heavy, thick glass that covers the light bulb.  Most commonly, they are put into an enclosure, but be aware of touching a halogen capsule itself directly, is not a good idea.  The MR16 lamp is low voltage in most cases, but there are some that are made with a line voltage.

If you have MR16 halogen light bulbs in your home or business, and you want to save energy with the Sylvania Tru-Aim MR16, then you want to make sure of several characteristics when replacing them.  You need to make sure that the reflector opening is 2 inches, verify the operating voltage of the lamp and the pin spacing of the bulbs themselves.  A typical MR16 halogen has a pin spacing at 5.3 millimeters.  It's important to also get the wattage of the lamp which is clearly marked in most cases.  If you have these basics then the only other thing you will need is the beam spread.  This is determined by degrees but also by a descriptive term like narrow flood or narrow spot and so on.  The Tru-Aim MR16 comes in several beam spreads, so there will be no sacrifice when changing to these lamps.

In summary, the Sylvania Tru-Aim MR16 halogen bulbs are the next generation of MR16 and MR11 lamps bringing with them energy efficiency and greater performance.  We have a large inventory of halogen bulbs for nearly every type of light fixture in the field.  If you need help identifying a MR16 halogen bulb, our customer service representatives can help you determine what you have.
